HIVE – From Games to Business was a youth-focused acceleration project implemented by the GAUSS Institute in partnership with the Macedonian Game Development Association (MAGDA), with support from the U.S. Embassy in Skopje through the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program.[file:25][file:29][file:30] The project was designed to strengthen employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in the IT creative industry, with a specific focus on video game development in North Macedonia.

Title: HIVE – From Games to Business.
Objective(s): The project aimed to create an ecosystem for the IT creative industry in Macedonia by accelerating young game-development teams to turn ideas into market-ready products, support the creation of new micro and small enterprises, improve youth employability, and strengthen cooperation among public, private, civil society, and academic stakeholders.
Summary: HIVE established an accelerator space in Bitola where young developers could work on their projects, receive mentorship from experienced professionals, attend specialized training, and prepare their products for publication on international digital platforms such as Steam. The project combined game design, programming, 3D modeling, project management, and business development support to help participants convert creative potential into real entrepreneurial and employment opportunities.
Period of implementation: The award period ran from 15 July 2015 to 15 July 2016, while the core implementation and acceleration activities were carried out during that timeframe.
Implementing partners: GAUSS Institute – Foundation for New Technologies, Innovations and Knowledge Transfer, and the Macedonian Game Development Association (MAGDA).
Contracting authority: U.S. Embassy Skopje, Office of Public Affairs, through the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program; the federal award was issued by the U.S. Department of State.
Role of GAUSS Institute
GAUSS Institute served as the lead applicant and implementing organization of the project. Its role included project management and coordination, hosting and equipping the HIVE accelerator space in Bitola, organizing the mentoring and training process, supporting outreach and communication activities, and building partnerships with academic institutions, civil society organizations, and private-sector actors relevant to the gaming and creative industries. GAUSS also contributed co-financing in the form of premises, utilities, equipment, internet connection, web-page development, and organizational support for implementation and sustainability.
Outputs
The project produced a functional accelerator space in Bitola, equipped with workstations, licensed software, training equipment, and supporting tools for game development. It also established a project web presence and communication materials, organized promotional and outreach events, selected and supported teams for acceleration, and delivered five practical trainings tailored to the needs of young developers.
Deliverables
Key deliverables included the establishment of the HIVE workspace, mentoring support for participating teams, five customized training modules, development of learning materials and case-based practical guidance, project promotion materials, outreach activities, and support for teams in preparing games for digital publication and market entry. The project also generated business planning tools, Steam profiles and promotion assets for participating teams, as well as a platform for continued alumni engagement and future project development.
Outcomes
The project accelerated three senior teams and one junior team, trained 55 participants, and enabled two video games to reach the final stage of completion by the end of the project It improved participants’ technical, design, project management, and business skills, strengthened their entrepreneurial orientation, and created a stronger local support network for young people interested in the game development sector. The initiative also opened cooperation with educational institutions and generated follow-up ideas for cross-border and institutional partnerships.
Significance
HIVE is pioneering a structured accelerator for game development in North Macedonia and showing that the video game industry can be a viable pathway for youth employment, skills development, and startup creation. By linking creativity, technology, mentoring, and business development, the project helped position Bitola as an emerging local hub for digital creative industries. It provided a replicable model for future initiatives in the country and the wider region.
